Water and Mirror Saint Mesrop Mashtots 440-362 AD is best known for having restored or invented the Armenian alphabet. He was born in the village of Hatsek in the Taron region. of Greater Armenia, onse a part of Iran, and bried in the village of Lushakan. as founder of the Armenian written language, Mesrop was also familiar with the language of Farsi, Greek, and Syriac. In order to form the Armenian script, he benefitted from those of these neighboring nations, firstly alphabet of Pahlavi and Avestan and secondly that of Assyrian and Greek. Today, the highest national medal granted to prominent figures in Armenia is the Mesrop Medal. The number 802, which represents the some of the years of Mesrop’s birth (362) and death (440), is the number of editions of this book.
